'Container'
is a web based depository for memories created in the virtual reality modelling language VRML. It was originally commissioned by curator Sylvie Parent for The Montreal
Bienalle in October 2000
http://www.ciac.ca/biennale2000/fr/electro.html
It was comprised of endless individual containers for storage enabling the user to release the remembrances, thoughts, memories, nightmares of a person or place or incident past and 'deposit' them inside a virtual storage unit.
Containers could be visited, added to and changed or left privately secure for ever. The site is now archived for viewing so that you can browse and if you wish register at a virtual reception
as at any regular storage place. You will be asked to fill out a form
and indicate what you wish to be put into your unit. Digital images,
sounds, movies, 3D objects and text are possible including html pages.
'Container'
uses the web environment as a form of consciousness which holds and contains
these memories thereby liberating the users mind from such a responsibility.
"In the midst of life we are in death" says the UK Anglican funeral service
but in death where are we? When someone dies where do they go and where
do we remain in relation to them? Can we plot the co-ordinates where it
is within our consciousness that they remain, haunting, becoming memories,
sharing our space and affecting our real world... no but we can perhaps
give the memories new and different co-ordinates so that they can exist
somewhere else. If their body rests inside a grave then their memory can
rest inside a container. During
June and July 2001 'Container' was being shown as part of the UK Exhibition
"Silent Motion"
